Whale Watching in Antarctica - A Once in a Lifetime Experience You Cannot Afford to Miss

Even though Antarctica is known for its extremely cold climate, it is still teeming with life. It is home to different kinds of animals that have the ability to withstand the harshness of the continent's climate. Antarctic animals include various species of fish, birds, and mammals. The mammals that live in the Antarctic region include seals and whales. There are indeed various species of whales that can be found in the waters of Antarctica that whale watching is one of the most common activities that the region's visitors enjoy.

Despite their gigantic size, whales prove to be lovable. The way they move gracefully through the water is just fascinating. They are highly intelligent creatures that they are able to communicate with each other over long distances for social reasons. They are mammals, so we share certain characteristics with them, and this is another reason why we are endeared to them.

There are two groups of whales. These are the baleen whales and toothed whales. Instead of teeth, baleen whales have comblike structures that are used to filter krill and fish from the water. The kinds of baleen whales that can be found in the waters of Antarctica include:

• Blue Whale. While it is considered as the largest species of whale, it is also considered as the largest animal on earth. On the average, it weighs 84 tonnes and it is about 24 meters long.
• Fin Whale. It is 20 meters long and grows to an average weight of 40 to 50 tonnes, making it the second largest of all the whales.
• Sei Whale. They are smaller and more slender than the blue and fin whales. It grows up to 18.5 meters in length and weighs up to 29 tonnes.
• Southern Right Whale. It may reach 18 meters in length and can weigh up to 96 tonnes. Its head, which is decorated with callosities, makes up to a quarter of its total length.
• Humpback Whale. With a skin covered with warts, bumps, and encrusted barnacles, its average length and weight is 13 meters and 31 tonnes.
• Minke Whale. Its average length and weight is 8 meters and 8 tonnes and it lives for about 50 years.

Toothed whales, on the other hand, have sharp teeth that help them catch their prey, such as fish and squid. The kinds of toothed whales that can be found in the Antarctic are the Orca, Southern Bottlenose, Sperm, and Southern Fourtooth Whale. Dolphins can also be seen, which include the hourglass dolphin and the southern rightwhale dolphin. Whales and dolphins are almost the same and they differ only in size. Everything smaller than 4 meters is considered a dolphin.

Other than various species of whales, various species of fish and birds can be found in the continent. These species of fish include Antarctic cod, ice fish, dragon fish, crocodile fish, rat-tailed fish, robber fish, hagfish, and skates. The birds, on the other hand, include penguins and albatrosses. Emperor, Gentoo, Adelie, King, Macaroni, and Rockhopper are some of the species of penguins that live in the continent. Species of albatross that can be seen are Wandering, Gray-headed, Lightly-maned sooty, and Black-browed albatross.

When you visit Antarctica, whale watching is one thing that you cannot afford to miss. Observe these gentle and lovable giants as they elegantly move through the water. These mammals, our fellow mammals, just do not fail to fascinate us. Watching them is one reason why your Antarctic holiday is all worth it, making it an experience of a lifetime and an encounter with nature that you will surely cherish.

Deciding Where to Go on Your European Cruise

One of the most difficult parts of planning your cruise vacation is deciding where to go in Europe. Europe may not be a larger continent then Asia but Europe has more to offer you with their beautiful sites and scenes.

If you are a fan of sunbathing then you will love to see the sandy beaches and the blue sea in Europe. However, Europe has plenty to offer you than the Arctic cruise packages where you can travel to Russia and Greenland. When you go to the Northern Europe you will see plenty of people and they have commented that this place is magical. They have also said that the cruises are majestic. The places are untouched by humans and how wildlife was roaming the icebergs in Greenland in there own environment unconcerned by the great big cruise ship going passed.

And not to forget if you are in a romantic mood at that time and you want to treat yourself and your loved one then you may want to consider the romance of France and Italy which all the major cruise lines have visited before.

I know I am not making your decision any easier by telling you how wonderful and enjoyable these places are but what can I say? I have been around Europe and also to the Northern Europe, Greenland and the UK but also to Southern Europe where my loved one enjoys it the most.

Now I will try to make your decision easier. I am going to split the cruises up so you can choose for yourselves where you would rather go.

1) Northern Europe - If you are with your couple or friends who love trying something different. And who loves the cool weather, and then this is the perfect holiday for you. Make sure to check out which ports you will stop at. You will need pack correctly and make sure to enough warm clothes with you, but you won't need them on the cruise ship.

2) Southern Europe - This is perfect for anyone and by far the most popular destinations that people go on. This is perfect for families, friends and couples on there honeymoon!

So there you have it. Hopefully this gives you a good insight and helps you decide on where to go on your next break and maybe we might meet on the next cruise ship, who knows?

Canaries Cruises - The Ultimate Holiday?

The Canary Islands are a haven for tourists year-round and while many choose to visit one of its seven islands, going on a Canaries cruise can be the best way to see the highlights of this sun-drenched region.

Located off the west coast of Africa, the Canaries are ideally situated for sun-worshipers heading to the area at any time of the year - the average annual temperature in the region is 22 degrees C.

Thanks to their Spanish culture, the Canaries are not just for those looking to get a decent tan. Islands such as Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Fuerteventura have much to offer holidaymakers wanting to sample the region's history and food, as well as its breathtaking natural beauty, which includes sights such as volcanoes and caves.

Gran Canaria is where the capital of the Canaries, Las Palmas, is located. The island is the perfect stop for those on a Canaries cruise as it offers a little bit of everything - great shopping, lively nightlife, historical sights, sports, festivals, leisure parks and - last but certainly not least - those famous beaches.

Elsewhere, Canaries cruises are likely to make a stop at Santa Cruz on Tenerife, which is perfect for those looking to make the most of the region's clubs, sporting facilities and health and beauty centres.

Other popular Canaries destinations include Fuerteventura - which is generally seen to be the ideal stop for those wanting a more low-key onshore excursion - and Lanzarote, which tends to attract young travellers looking for the best clubs and bars in the region.

Of course, on a Canaries cruise you are likely to take in most of the main stops around the islands, meaning that you will be able to experience the best of the Canary Islands' sights and sounds in the space of a few days or weeks.

Depending on the cruise line you choose to go with, you should be able to choose from itineraries that cruise the Canaries as part of bigger packages incorporating destinations such as Morocco and Spain.

Cruise lines that visit the Canary Islands include Costa, Cunard, P&O, Royal Caribbean and Island Cruises.

Cruise Ship Travel Your Best Value Vacation

On your typical land vacation you will spend around $150 per night to $300 per night for a nice standard hotel room for two people. A rental car will run you around $35 to $50 per day for a cheap car. Breakfast will average you around $15 per person, Lunch will run you around $20 per person and dinner will run you around $30 per person after taxes and tips. For a one week trip, two people will be spending somewhere between $2,200 and $3,400 before you factor in any airfare, entertainment or attractions. These figures are conservative for a budget vacation.

If you look at some of the recent cruise deals, particularly some of the last-minute cruise deals available, you can cruise for as low as $50 per day per person. Generally, that low price is going to offer you an inside cabin (no port windows). However, if you upgrade and pay around $100 per person per day, you can get an outside stateroom and possibly a balcony if you shop around. Peter B. Diaz, President and CEO of VoyageMonkey Online Travel says we've recently seen 7-day Alaska and Caribbean cruises going for under $350 per person. A value like that is hard to beat. The ships simply can't go out with empty cabins. They must fill them in the last few weeks prior to sailing or they lose money.

Your typical cruise price will include all of your meals and entertainment. Your meals will generally consist of three daily sit down full course meals, three daily cafeteria style buffet meals and various other dining venues throughout the day including room service. There is no shortage of good food. Sit down dinners often include steak, lobster, prime rib as well as some ethnic theme nights. You'll also find late night buffets and 24-hour pizza and snacks on many ships.

Your entertainment will generally consist of nightly Las Vegas style musical & dance shows, stand-up comedy, magic shows and various lounge & dance club performers. Other ship amenities generally include swimming pools, Jacuzzis, fitness center & day spa and gambling casino complete with slot machines and gaming tables. Not included in the price of your cruise is cocktails, spa treatments, gambling, shopping and shore excursions.

The nice feature of a cruise is that you'll get to see exotic ports of call along the way. Most 7-day cruises will generally visit three or more ports. Just hop off the ship at each port and enjoy the day. It doesn't cost you any money to leave the ship and walk around town. Most ports of call are safe to venture on foot and sight see. On your typical land vacation you will visit one destination and stay for the duration. On a cruise you get multiple destinations without packing and unpacking between destinations. There is also no need to worry about making dinner reservations. Cruise life is easy.

Your time on the ship between ports is anything but boring. Today's ships are large floating resorts and entertainment facilities with plenty of elbow room. Spend the day at the pool or spa, dance each night away or enjoy the evening stars on deck. You'll meet plenty of really nice interesting people from all over. It's hard to find such a great value vacation today. But thanks to the cruise lines, it's easy to get away and have an affordable trip and a great time.

Escape to the Caribbean on a Sun-Drenched Cruise

A cruise in the Caribbean can offer the perfect holiday. As well as the unbeatable combination of sun, sea and sand, taking a cruise also offers the excitement of continuously discovering new destinations and never staying in the same place for too long.

The Caribbean's many islands offer many different possible itineraries for those going on a cruise in the region. This week, we look at what the western Caribbean has to offer, moving further east next week.

One of the most popular Caribbean cruise destinations is the Bahamas, a group of some 700 islands offering many different attractions and forms of entertainment. Nassau is the most common cruise stop here and as the capital city it offers a wealth of historical and cultural sights that should not be missed, particularly cathedrals, fortresses and various mansions.

To the south of the Bahamas is Cuba, another history and culture-rich destination. Its main stop is the capital, Santiago de Cuba, which features a UNESCO-listed heritage site in the form of the famous Castillo de San Pedro de la Roca fortress and an array of entertainment options such as live jazz, energetic dance venues and exotic restaurants.

Another popular western Caribbean cruise stop is Grand Cayman in the Cayman Islands. This particular island boasts the famed Seven Mile Beach and the capital city, George Town, which as you might expect offers superb shopping and a wide range of nightspots to keep cruise-goers entertained.

Meanwhile, Jamaica is probably one of the most famous Caribbean holiday destinations and is home to cruise stops such as Montego Bay, where natural beauty sights such as the Windsor caves combine with man-made attractions like the Bob Marley Experience and various plantation tours.

Another top Jamaica cruise stop is the gorgeous Ocho Rios, best known for its colourful gardens containing wild orchids, ginger lilies, anthuriums and other beautiful blooms and sights such as Dolphin Cove, James Bond Beach and the unmissable Dunns River Falls.

Whichever itinerary you choose, the famous Caribbean weather and the charms of the local people are likely to make any western Caribbean cruise an unforgettable one.

Cruise-goers have a variety of options when it comes to booking their package, with cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean, Costa, Princess Cruises and Cunard among those that sail through the region.

Packages can range from wide-ranging cruises throughout the Caribbean to more specialist itineraries focusing on a specific area.

Galapagos Vacations

The Galapagos Islands are a group of volcanic islands in the Pacific Ocean, 970Km West of Ecuador. It is a world heritage area with wildlife found on the islands that doesn't exist anywhere else on the planet. In times gone by the Islands were very difficult to get to however, Galapagos vacations have become a reality in recent times due to the tour operators meeting the demand for cruises and tours around the area.

The theory of evolution was inspired by visits to the Island by Charles Darwin. There are 13 main Islands and your Galapagos vacation could take you around most of them.

Wild life is abundant in the area; everything from giant tortoise to iguana can be seen roaming around the islands as well as hundreds of species that are unique to the Galapagos Islands.

The weather on the islands varies depending upon the time of year you visit. For example June to November will bring a comfortable temperature of 22 ºC, whereas May to December brings a much higher temperature of 26 ºC. Heavy rains can occur in the rainy season which is effected by the El Nino phenomenon.

A Galapagos vacation will more than likely come with all the trimmings and luxuries of any other cruise except with the addition of seeing this bizarre place in the middle of the Pacific. You can expect to see things that very few people have ever seen and experience this exciting, remote environment.

A tour around the Galapagos Islands isn't for everyone. It is a destination like no other and an adventure like nothing you have ever seen. The whole family will enjoy it. Your accommodation will be the luxury ship that brought you there and you will likely be able to book excursions around the islands.

The ship will be fully stocked with everything you need and will be luxury accommodation. The ships that cruise around the Galapagos Islands are usually smaller ships with a smaller number of crew making for a friendlier, more family like atmosphere. Instead of formal dining you will likely have a BBQ.

There will usually be a specialist on board, supplied by the cruise operator, a naturalist who will be an expert on the animals and plants on the islands. This guide is an invaluable asset who can show you the best the islands have to offer, be sure to utilize them to the maximum. They love their subject matter and love to talk about it so ask as many questions as you like.

The Galapagos Islands are undoubtedly one of the strangest and interesting destinations on the planet and up until recent years were inaccessible to most people. The invention of Galapagos vacations has brought the Galapagos Islands easily within reach of the masses.

Cruise Tips - 15 Tips to Make Your Cruise More Enjoyable

A cruising holiday is not everybody's cup of tea, but recently the cruise line industry is reporting huge increases in the amount of visitors.

Cruising can be a mysterious holiday for most first timers and there will be things you either didn't consider or didn't realise. A cruise is a magical vacation idea and we have put a few tips together to make your trip even more magical.

1. Use a professional travel agent for your booking. Preferably a specialist cruise agent. The difference is astounding. They can book everything for you, from shore excursions to when and where you will eat on board.

2. Book a suitable cruise. Do your homework and check that the cruise is suitable for you and your fellow travellers. If you have children make sure the cruise is suitable for kids. If you don't like kids then book a cruise that doesn't cater for them.

3. Cell phones don't work at sea! Take walkie talkies so you can communicate with your travel companions.

4. Eat at the second dinner. Book the second seating for your dinner. This will give you more time for your shore excursions and will mean you aren't rushing back to get dinner.

5. Rent a car. It is often cheaper for a group of people to rent a car instead of paying for shore excursions. Book it in advance so you can just pick it up for the day when you arrive at shore.

6. Request a large table for dining. The cruise line will try and match you up with similar people and you can make some new friends.

7. Take the kids. If you have kids then check the suitability of the cruise before you book. Most have kids clubs and activities as well as baby sitting services. Check that your kids are old enough before you book.

8. In cabin baby sitting is great! Take advantage of it, especially with young kids. It will be the same baby sitter throughout the cruise and they are always professionals who love kids.

9. Eat early. I know that this contradicts the point above. If you have kids you will need to choose the early dinner because kids usually wont wait until 8 o'clock.

10. Buy the drinks bracelet. The drinks will work out cheaper if you buy the bracelet.

11. Don't buy all the photos as soon as you can. There will be a sale of them at the end of the cruise and you will get them much cheaper.

12. Expect to tip. The waiters only make about $35 a week so they need the tips to make up their wages.

13. Get a balcony if you don't like crowds. The ship decks do get quite crowded but a private balcony is a great retreat from the crowds.

14. Read the ships activities every night, you don't want to miss a thing.

15. Dress codes. Obey the dress codes. Most ships do have a dress code even if they don't mention it in the brochure. Take a smart set of clothes just in case.

Cruising is fun and exciting vacation choice. One you will never forget. Follow our advice and cruise your way to the most magical and relaxing vacation you have ever experienced. Have fun and let your every day troubles drift away.

Cruise Travel Tips - 5 Ways to Save Money on Board a Cruise Ship

Cruising can be a great way to save money on your vacations, but what most people don't think about is the price of the cruise itself is just the beginning when it comes to how much they hope you will spend. The cruise lines are happy to get you on board the ship so they can get you to pull out your wallet for drinks, purchases in the gift shops, money in the casino, shore excursions and activities, and so on. Here are 5 cruise travel tips to help you hold onto more of your money on your next cruise.

1. If you are going to spend money in the casino, set a predetermined daily amount beforehand and stick to it. You can win in these casinos but not as easily or as much as you will in the ones in, say, Las Vegas. It can still be a lot of fun but keep your budgeted amount in mind and don't go over.

2. Art auctions. A lot of cruises have these, and I tend to get sucked into them for some reason. I bought about 5 pieces one time and they are still sitting in a box in the spare room. I just have never gotten around to having them framed and put up. If you have a lot of need for art, it can be a decent place to get some and the auctions are fun, but if not, try and resist this because you can spend quite a lot of money on art that can be obtained elsewhere for probably less money.

3. I love to shop, and when limited to the gift shops on board the ship, that doesn't stop me from shopping. However, I tend to spend too much for things that I definitely don't need and probably could buy on eBay or on shore for a lot less. Sure, go ahead and pick up a few souvenirs of the ship, but don't go "overboard."

4. Before using your cell phone on the ship, check and see what you'll be paying per minute. Often the charges are quite high, up to around $3.00 per minute in some cases and sometimes more. Wait to go on shore to use your phone or laptop if possible.

5. Many cruises now offer the choice of an "alternative" restaurant in addition to your included meals. There's really no need to take advantage of this as it means extra money, since all your food is included in the price of your trip. However, if you hear fellow passengers giving rave reviews to the meals there, you might opt to eat one of your dinners there as a special treat. But otherwise, save your money.

Amazing Mediterranean Cruises

There are two different types of Mediterranean cruises you can take. If you choose to go to the eastern Mediterranean, you will go to the eastern side of Italy, Greece, and Turkey. The western Mediterranean cruise includes the southern coast of France, Spain and Italy. Whether it's seeing the majestic mountains of Athens or riding a gondola on the Grand Canal in Venice, each Mediterranean cruise offers many great cities to visit.

If you choose a western Mediterranean cruise you can visit places like Barcelona, the French Riviera, Italy and Tunisia. The eastern Mediterranean cruise will take you to places like Venice, Athens, Istanbul, and the Greek Islands. Whichever cruise you decide to take you will experience a world of different cultures, learn about the different religions of the region and taste exotic foods from different countries, all while seeing amazing sites.

What to do on board?

The cruise ship offers many enjoyable things to do as well. They offer a variety of food and dining from casual to formal. They have everyday food like pizza and burgers to Mediterranean foods to choose from. Most cruise ships have a casino and more than one bar or lounge as well. Normally there are one or more swimming pools and sometimes miniature golf. There are spas for massages and salons for manicures. The rooms are set up like most hotels, with access to the internet and a television to watch in your room. So while you're on board, in between visits off the ship, you will be able to relax and enjoy the comfort of the ship and your room.

The price of either cruise, whether eastern or western Mediterranean, will all depend on the cruise line, airfare, gratuities , and also how many days you choose to book your cruise for. The deals usually range from 1-2 nights up to two weeks. You can also plan your cruise any time of the year. Planning it in the off season will probably get you a better deal. It is best to shop around and check on available packages, what they include and how long are they for. You can research online or call a travel agent directly to help book your cruise
